2012 IYLP program describtion Aim of the program: BNUZ students will devedescribtionlop effective skills in inquiry-based learning and critical research skills using a peer-mentoring approach Dates: 20 June to 20 July 2012 Description of the program: BNUZ undergraduate students will work with a team of international student mentors. The student mentor teams will be comprised of undergraduate and postgraduate students from Harvard University, the University of Oxford and Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Campus. Each mentoring team will include two mentors from Oxford and/or Harvard, one BNUZ mentor, and two teaching assistants to support the team. BNUZ students will work collaboratively with their mentor team to design and undertake a research project in their area of interest and present their research findings at the end of the program. The mentor teams will work with both whole and small groups of students, as well as with individual students, during a two-week period to: discuss the students’ areas of interest and identify possible topics for research design a good research question and topic for investigation identify suitable methods to research this topic and the types of information and evidence that will be required develop an effective research design and plan collect and critically analyse and evaluate resources and evidence develop an argument and conclusion based on this analysis and synthesis of evidence present the research findings in any suitable format Purpose of the program: It is important to note that: this program aims to promote cross cultural learning and mutual understanding this program is designed to enhance students’ critical literacy skills and decision-making abilities through inquiry-based learning in this program, the process of learning is more important than the final product and the emphasis is on the sharing of ideas between the mentors and BNUZ students the learning process in this program is student-led, collaborative and cooperative; not a ‘top down’ teacher-student teaching model, but a mutually supportive process that will result in a range of learning outcomes for all participants students will be encouraged to develop creative and engaging ways to present their research findings the research findings can be presented in any format; this could be a written report, a Powerpoint presentation, a website, or any other creative process or product
