2013 Film OCD #119 - Gravity is a pretty awesome experience on the big screen. Its a pretty terrific marriage between story and form with the weightless camera and Cuarons long takes being in perfect harmony with the astronaut survival story which takes place in something approaching real time (actually the story appears to take place over 180 minutes give or take). And I really appreciate that the film doesnt bog itself down in unnecessary story complications and subplots but keeps it straightforward dealing with one character and her survival/emotional/spiritual(?) journey. While I cant claim to be the biggest fan of Sandra Bullock, her everywoman persona is a strong fit for the material and shes very good in the film. Being able to hold the audiences attention, even with everything else there is to watch in the movie, is no mean feat. Clooneys always a welcome presence, but its Sandra Bullocks movie and shes as good as shes ever been. Otherwise, I dont think theres too many depths to plumb. Theres some birth imagery among the death, but its not hard to parse. The story is simple, but that doesnt mean its bad. Ill take simple and strong over convoluted and weak any day. Its a simple story, polished to a great degree and creates a world on film like few other films. Its absolutely worth seeing on the big screen.
