2013 May Cooking: Fruit Salad, Tues 3rd children made a wombat stew with natural materials they had collected from the play ground after reading the story. One boy suggested making a stew using real ingredients. So the children were given fruit, plates and plastic knives while our educators read the story together. Some children have become very familiar with the test and were able to use their recall, prediction and listening skills to join in as they read. The children then were able to cut the fruit into pieces to further develop mathematical and language skills. Educators discussed the size and portions with the children. The children also compared the fruit to the ingredients in the story. For example, the adjective crunchy was related to apples and gooey as bananas. The children compared descriptive words to the fruit in their cooking experience, they were able to develop their skills of comparison and reflective thinking. The children planned to cook Anzac biscuits next week. 16/5/2013 Children from the Koala’s and Possum’s room were very excited this day.
