2013 Sports Evangelism Mission Trip Day One Update May 26th Daxton Cuany Well, here we are. San Jose Costa Rica. After a long day of travel we finally landed last night at 8:30pm their time (10:30pm NC time). We took off from RDU at 10:25am and flew for 1.5 hours to Newark NJ. The trip was only supposed to take 1.25 hours but right as we were about to land the pilot pulled up and flew around another time due to wind shears. Although the pilot had everything in complete control the situation was pretty scary because it was quite the bumpy ride. After we landed in Newark right at noon we had a 5 hour 50 minute layover until our flight to San Jose. During the layover we got lunch in the airport (at a delicious little Chinese place humorously named “Wok and Roll”), made up games involving the moving sidewalks, napped by the gate, and played basketball and various other games using hacky sacks and the bottom of the djembe we brought. After a long but eventful layover we were finally in the air bound for San Jose around 6pm. It was a 4.5 hour flight down to Costa Rica flying over incredible east cost shore line, beautiful cloud cover, ocean, and the astounding lights of the Costa Rican Shore until we landed in San Jose. After we landed, got our luggage, got through customs (barely), and met Danny outside the airport, we got on a charter bus that took us to the Nazarene Seminary where we will be staying for the next couple days. We are all staying in a house on the premises with 4 bedrooms and a large common area. We all got to bed around midnight and after an amazing night of sleep including two earthquakes (which unfortunately I did not get the pleasure of feeling) we woke up to the sound of tropical birds and what I suspect to be some sort of monkey that lives in the tree by our house. That pretty much brings us to now. Today we have a day full of soccer set up. This afternoon we are going to a high school in downtown San Jose and pretty much playing non-stop 5v5 soccer matches against these kids. From what Danny says these guys are the tough crowd in San Jose. What I mean by that is there are 20 year olds in the 8th grade… we are going to be playing these guys all afternoon one game and against one grade then another game versus another grade. This trip so far has been incredible. I love the guys that came and Danny hilarious to talk to. He is a big Argentinian man with a goatee and glasses. His accent cracks me up but I love it. I haven’t seen a whole lot of the country yet obviously but I have already decided that it is hands down way better than America. (Mom and Dad, I may or may not come back. Dad, I wish you could be here too but I think I might continue the Cuany presence here for the next few years.) As far as prayer request please join us in thanking God for safe travel here as well as that God would protect us this afternoon from any injuries. More importantly pray that God would use us this afternoon to communicate the Gospel to these guys this afternoon and that hearts and lives would be changed. Thank you so much for your support. Daxton Cuany
