2014 Annual Design History Society Conference: Design for War and Peace Department for Continuing Education, University of Oxford Thursday 4 to Saturday 6 September 2014 Rewley House, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JA 2014, the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, is an apposite moment in which to reflect upon the relationship of design and craft to conflict. Objects and sites designed for war and peace offer a vibrant nexus of case studies and debates through which to examine the place of conflict in our collective memory. Please see the Provisional Conference timetable (pdf) for details of the intellectual frameworks, timing and speakers of the conference. Over 70 scholars will be travelling from around the globe to speak at Rewley House, ranging from doctoral candidates to professors, as well as practitioners, museum and heritage professionals and independent scholars. The sessions focus principally on conflicts from the First World War to the present day and reflect the interdisciplinarity of design history’s explorations of a wide range of objects, places and intellectual traditions across a diverse geography of theatres of conflict. The cross-fertilization of war and peace studies, which have often been segregated, is an important aspect of the conference. Panels are composed of three speakers with each speaker presenting a 20-minute paper in succession; a collective question session for all three speakers will follow the presentations. The conference fee rates are defined by three criteria: DHS membership; concessionary status. Early booking discounted fees are available until 1 July; thereafter higher rates apply. The fee includes three buffet lunches as well as tea and coffee break refreshments (kindly indicate any dietary requirements through your online booking). Delegates may wish to book an excursion for the Wednesday morning before the conference opens these visits incur additional fees (covering coach hire and entrance fees; groups are limited to 40) as does the Gala conference dinner at Kellogg College and must be pre-booked. Accommodation is not included in the conference fee. Oxford Colleges may well have rooms available, but they do book up quickly. A central listing is available at: universityrooms/en/city/oxford/home Online Booking is available now at conted.ox.ac.uk/events/warpeace.php.
