2014 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby – Calgary, AB The 2014 GMC Rangeland Derby Championship is in the books, and Kurt Bensmiller, driving the Tsuu T’ina Nation outfit, and along with outriders Shawn Calf Robe and Wayne Wright emerged from the sudden death championship final heat as the champions and $100,000.00 richer. It is the first Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby Championship for Bensmiller, the first for Tsuu T’ina Nation, and only the second time a wagon sponsored by a Treaty 7 First Nation has won the GMC Rangeland Derby. In a star studded penalty free championship final, Kurt Bensmiller won the championship final from barrel number 1 in heat number 9, death final by 60 one-hundredths of a second over Rae Croteau Jr. who placed 2nd from barrel number 2, defending champion Jason Glass placed 3rd from barrel number 4 and Gary Gorst who was 4th from barrel position number 3. Jason Glass also received the Calgary Stampede’s Safe Drive Award for the third time in his career for being the least penalized driver over the first 9 nights of the Rangeland Derby. Kris Molle received the Orville Strandquist Memorial Award for Top Rookie Driver, and Dustin Gorst was named the Calgary Stampede’s Outstanding Outrider. Earlier in the day, driver Brian Laboucane received the Calgary Stampede’s prestigious Guy Weadick Award presented annually to the one chuckwagon or rodeo competitor who best embodies what the cowboy stands for and who best typifies the spirit of the Calgary Stampede.. The Equine Outfit of Excellence was presented at the beginning of the evening. “BLAZER” of Wayne Knight’s outfit was named Champion Right Leader, “ACE” of Kurt Bensmiller’s outfit was named Champion Left Leader, “COLONEL” of Kirk Sutherland’s outfit was named Champion Left Wheeler, “LAW” of Rick Fraser’s outfit was named Champion Right Wheeler, “TOM” of Rae Croteau Jr.’s outfit and “ALL ABOUT ME” of Tim Haroldson’s outfit were named the Champion Outriding Horses.
