2014 Film OCD #17 - The Horror of it All was reportedly the Terence Fisher film the director was least proud of. He has company as I think its terrible too. If you were going to make a case against Terence Fisher as a director, you can start here. Mind you, whats good about the film, a few atmospheric shots, are to the credit of Fisher and he has nothing to work with. It was supposed to be a horror comedy in the vein of The Old Dark House but someone forgot to write jokes. Or to come up with anything interesting. The score for the film is really insipid too, trying to make funny cues when nothing interesting is really happening on screen. Of course, the main issue with the film is that it stars Pat Boone. Sure he may have been the clean cut teen idol that was safe for middle America in the 1950s, but casting him as a lead was a colossal mistake as he has zero acting talent and relentlessly mugs his way the whole movie. Kevin Smith has more talented actors in his films than Pat Boone. Terence Fisher made this film away from Hammer after a falling out after the failure of The Phantom of the Opera. Fortunately, they got back together with The Gorgon and Fisher made some of the best films of his career. The Horror of it All is one thats best forgotten and only for those trying to watch as many Terence Fisher films as possible.
