2014 Go Zambia VACANCY: Assistant Program Officer The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) is a Non – Governmental Organisation with members in 11 of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries officially launched in September 1992. MISA focuses primarily on the need to promote free, independent and pluralistic media, as envisaged in the 1991 Windhoek Declaration. A vacancy has now arisen and we require the services of an ASSISTANT PROGRAM OFFICER to be based at MISA Zambia Secretariat in Lusaka. POSITION DESCRIPTION Proven competence in media freedom issues, compilation of alerts, Media statements, communiques and broadcast updates and Organising public events such lunches, workshops, high level meetings and media briefs. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Undertake media freedom monitoring by reading newspapers daily, monitoring daily online media and traditional media as TV, radio listening Compile draft alerts, communiques and broadcast updates based on the gathered information for onward forwarding to the Information and Research Officer. Update media directory for Zambia to include all new media and latest contacts Assist in undertaking advocacy activities Assist in Capacity building of Community media in Good governance and editorial content Undertaking Campaigns to Decriminalise Freedom of Expression in Zambia Holding Working meetings with media stakeholders, Members of Parliament and civil society to identify and produce a submission outlining areas of amendment to the Penal Code and the Constitution Hold discussions on free speech and media freedom Institute legal action against laws which criminalise freedom of expression Build a strong ATI broad-based Coalition to campaign for the enactment of ATI legislation Undertake Radio and Television campaigns on freedom of expression JOB QUALIFICATIONS A full grade 12 school certificate Degree/Diploma in Mass communication. A diploma in law would be an added advantage. KEY COMPETENCIES Quick learner, interpersonal skills, able to work under minimum supervision, confident and inspiring personality, multy tasking.
