2014 Hunt Recap: 9/1 I flew to WA where I hunted Roosevelt elk with a buddy for a week. Covered a lot of country(40+ miles) in the Mt Adams/Goat Rocks areas. I shot my first elk, a cow, with my bow at 50 yards on the second to last day. 9/9 I flew back to Billings, MT. My brother picked me up and we headed for WY to bowhunt antelope for 4 days. Over the 4 days I stalked within 100 yards of countless bucks and drew back on 3, but let them go, in hopes of getting a bigger one. On 9/14 Darrell shot a nice buck and we decided to head for our next destination: CO. On 9/16 we packed into the Weminuche Wilderness on horseback(actually muleback). My mule was a stubborn ass, of course, and decided to run under a tree limb, which jousted me off lol. I landed flat on my back; definitely the highlight of the ride in. We ended up not getting packed into the spot I wanted to be(where Id scouted previously and put a lot of research into) because of other hunters already camped there. It turned out to be a bad deal for us; two bulls came out of the area I wanted to be in(a smaller 5x5 and a giant 7x8). We covered a lot of ground in our area and didnt see or hear anything at all. With 3 days left until our scheduled pack-out date, we decided to pack up camp and hike out. The 6 mile hike was pretty brutal as we had full packs plus the bow target and a hard bowcase to carry out(our packer convinced us to take them in since it was no problem for the mules to pack in). Bad call there! After getting out of the woods we headed for another area I had in mind. We drove a couple hours into the mountains and made camp at 11,000 in an awesome area. We hunted that area without hearing or seeing anything, despite lots of good elk sign. 9/20 Decided to pack up and head out of CO in hopes of filling my antelope tag in WY, since the elk hunting just wasnt productive. 9/21 We hunted WY for the day. I put stalks on quite a few nice bucks, chased em all over the hills with my decoy lol. I got to within 65 yards of a nice buck and made a good shot, but he was on high alert and spooked at the sound of the shot. By the time my arrow was 3/4 of the way to him he had already moved a full body length. My arrow hit the ground where hed been. Would have been an awesome shot, but I guess thats why they call them speed goats! I ended up shooting a small buck at the end of the day. Meat in the freezer is better than Tag Soup! Were headed back to ND now. I smell like 3 weeks of blood, sweat, and almost tears(CO Tag Soup sucks!) Learned a lot of lessons, saw a lot of beautiful country. Wish we could have heard some bulls raging but maybe next time. Im already looking forward to it. Also looking forward to deer season in OK. For now though, its back to reality...
