2014 Malaysian MotoGP: Marquez scores a dozen As the lights went off at Sepang for the 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix, pole sitter Marc Marquez made an awful start that meant he was passed by Dani Pedrosa, Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo as the riders made their way to the first corner. In a bid to regain his lost position, Marquez ran into Lorenzo which resulted in the Repsol Honda rider running wide off the track. Dani Pedrosa lead the race in the opening few corners and was followed Dovizioso in second and Lorenzo in third position. Lorenzo was on the charge as he passed Pedrosa and Dovizioso to grab the race lead by end of the first lap. Among all this action, further down the grid Aleix Espargaro and Alvaro Bautista bumped into each other which resulted in both the riders crashing out of the race. Valentino Rossi was also upping his race pace as he passed Dovizioso to move up to third place whereas Marquez also made up for his opening lap goof up to clinch fourth position. With 18 laps in the race remaining Pedrosa lost the front end of his Repsol Honda machine which resulted in him sliding off the track, although he was able to rejoin the race his dream of a podium position was all but over. The crash promoted Rossi and Dovizioso in second and third position respectively. In the following lap Marquez was able to out brake Dovizioso to pass him for third position. Cal Crutchlows woes continued as the Ducati rider had to retire from the race while running strong in sixth position owing to mechanical problems. The retirement follows his last lap crash at Australia while running in a comfortable second place. Ahead of all this drama, Lorenzo, Rossi and Marquez had formed a leading pack of riders and soon were well head from the trailing pack of riders. The pecking order remain unchanged for the following few laps with Rossi closing in on his Yamaha team-mate. Nicky Hayden also bit the dust as he lost his front in a similar manner to that of Pedrosa to crash out from the race with 14 laps remaining. In the ninth lap of the race Rossi was able to finally make his move stick on Lorenzo and the Italian MotoGP took the race lead to the delight of the large contingent of his fans gathered at Sepang. Before Lorenzo could recover from Rossis overtaking manoeuvre the Spanish rider was passed by Marquez to be relegated to third position from the race lead in a matter of few corners. Despite the fact that Marquez had upped his race pace, Rossi was able to maintain the race lead and soon the duo were a few seconds clear of Lorenzo who was in a lonely second position. Pedrosa who rejoined the race in last place had progress to climb up to 13th position to score a few points but with seven laps remaining, he fell again to crash out of the race. At the same moment Marquez was successful in passing Rossi to clinch the race lead from the Italian MotoGP veteran. It seemed as if the 2014 MotoGP champion will be able to break free from Rossi as he had done on numerous occasions but that wasnt to be as Rossi was able to follow him closely in the following few laps. With only a few laps in the race remaining Marquez managed to break free as Rossis tyres were deteriorating to cross the finish line with a lead of close to 2.5 seconds over the Yamaha rider who was followed by Lorenzo in third position. With this win Marquez equalled the Aussie legend Mick Doohans record of highest wins (12 victories) in a single season set in 1997. Marquezs triumph also handed Repsol Honda the crown of the 2014 constructors title with a race remaining. Rossi was visibly happy with the second position as he now has a 12 point lead over team-mate Lorenzo in the championship standings.
