2014 was a busy year for us. We’ve celebrated as so many dogs and cats have found their new homes, but occasionally we take a break to let you know about a dog or cat still looking for their new home. Today, we want to share with you one of our favorites: Raven. Raven came to the HSSW at the end of July and she’s been patiently waiting for her new family since then. Six months is a long time for any cat but it’s WAY too long for this sweetheart. Raven is special for so many reasons, but we want to call attention to something important: Raven is a diabetic. I wanted to write this post because her story is a little personal for me: A few weeks ago, I euthanized my cat of 17 years. He was a diabetic also. Like most diabetic cats, he was on a special diet and twice a day he received insulin shots. But when I think about all the great years we had together, I don’t remember insulin shots or special diets; I remember his fun and playful demeanor, I remember him hogging the bed and cackling at squirrels and birds outside. I remember all the things any pet owner would. And Raven deserves the same. The realities of caring for a diabetic cat are not much different from other cats. While daily injections may scare some people away, they really shouldn’t. Raven takes her shots very well – she doesn’t fuss or fight and she appreciates it when you reward her cooperation with a little cuddle time. She’s a loving cat who lets out a cheerful little chirp of a “hello” when you walk in the room and hops up for a snuggle or scratch on the cheek. She’s easy to love. We have so many great families in our community who adopt a cat or dog with special needs just like Raven. That family is out there and they won’t see her condition as a barrier - they’ll see an opportunity to provide some love and care to a great cat; a chance to form a very special bond with an animal who will return that love tenfold. Maybe you are that someone or maybe it’s someone you know. So we’re asking for you to spread the word about Raven. Help us find this sweet girl the home she deserves.
