2014 will be an inflection point for Big Data and the Internet of Things: Srinivas Tadigadapa, Intel 2014 will be the year wherein major technology trends like Big Data and Internet of Things will begin to scale and shape business models, innovation and the way we lead our lives. 2014 will be an inflection point for these technology trends. Let us examine how these trends will shape the world in 2014. Big Data will pave the way for innovation and will increasingly become part of the business models, thus enhancing the capability of the industry to compete globally. Intel believes that having 15 billion connected devices in the next few years is achievable. The biggest question however is where the data will go when these devices connect and how to make best use of that information. This will prompt a whole industry to grow around predictive analysis and raw data. Big Data will help make companies smarter, more progressive and give them a business advantage. Marketing will be the biggest driver for the use of cutting edge IT as they seek new innovative ways to reach out to and sell to customers with governments following the lead. In addition, analytics will become an integral part of business processes. The next big trend will be the application of technology in a range of different industries from manufacturing to power and utilities to logistics, where machine-to-machine interaction will play a big role. Estimates indicate that there will be 30X connected devices to connected people, thus enabling huge opportunities in what is often referred to as the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT). Internet of Things where devices compute and connect with data from embedded sensors can help with the shift to a more sustainable economy, from reducing food wastage to dramatically curbing energy consumption. It will allow the world to do more with less. Logistics management and transportation is clearly growing at an enormous rate. Within these sectors, there are innovations like near real-time monitoring of truck movements to monitoring flow rates on conveyor belts. The connected devices will have a significant impact on cloud computing due to the amount of data generated by each device. According to an IDC forecast, there will be 212 billion IoT devices worldwide by 2020. As far as mobility is concerned, I feel employers will soon shift to an environment of choosing one’s devices that offers the employees choice and also enable stable set of policies and evaluation criteria for the devices. Another key area, security, will continue to be the next big front. Security infrastructure will be designed to identify malicious activity in real time, allowing companies to react quickly, rather than after the event. Hardware assisted security will be the focus as security need to be implemented beyond the operating system. As far as mobility is concerned, I feel employers will soon shift to an environment of choosing one’s devices that offers the employees choice and also enable stable set of policies and evaluation criteria for the devices. Another key area, security, will continue to be the next big front. I believe that 2014 will bring a rapid increase in emerging technologies such as human augmentation, speech-to-speech translation, augmented reality, gesture control and wearable user interfaces. According to the research firm, Gartner, machines are becoming better at understanding humans and the environment – software that can recognize the emotion in someone’s voice is just one example. Also, education sector will be at the forefront of technology adoption and technology will play a significant role in a child’s education outside the classroom. The country and the region will see a huge increase in device ownership with one device for every student increasingly being the norm within the next three to five years.
