2015 AKS Guber Poll (7): Why Gov Akpabio should emulate Orji, ors on Zoning Ahead of the 2015 governorship election in the country, Nigerian governors have openly declared there support for the zoning/power sharing arrangement in order to ensure equitable distribution of governorship seat among the three senatorial districts in their respective states. Two weeks ago, it was widely reported in the media that the Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Chime has publicly declared that he was going to abide by the zoning formula operational in the state by handing over power to someone from the senatorial district that was yet to produce a governor in the state, in order to ensure that peace prevails in his state in 2015. Today, report just reaching my news desk has it that the Governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji has reinstated his decision to hand over power to the Ukwa/Ngwa people of Abia South Senatorial District of the state. According to Governor Orji, Abia charter of equity, which prescribed power sharing in the state, remained sacrosanct and would be implemented in the interest of peace and equity. Governor Orji spoke while receiving traditional rulers from Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area who paid him solidarity visit at the Government House Umuahia. The traditional rulers, who were led by the chairman of the Isiala Ngwa Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Solomon Nwosu, said they had come to show appreciation at the ongoing transformation of the state by the Governor. Making reference to 2015, the royal fathers said they came to remind him that he should not forget them “when the trumpet shall sound”. According to the traditional rulers, with the governor’s outstanding achievements so far, he had stood out as the best governor that had presided over the affairs of Abia since its creation in 1991. They urged Governor Orji to go to Senate in 2015 since the Constitution would not allow him to seek for third tenure as governor. Responding, Orji reiterated his desire to ensure that equity prevailed in power sharing equation in Abia state. “I am the first governor that openly declared that the governorship seat will be rotational. I am here to install equity and fair play in governance”, Orji said. The governor noted that the charter of equity, which was drafted after the creation of Abia holds the key to peaceful sharing of executive power among the component blocs, assuring that he would ensure the procedures enshrined in that document was followed to the letter. He said: “I want to leave here (Government House) peacefully”, pointing out that he would avoid any political decision that would plunge Abia into crisis after the expiration of his tenure.
