*2015 Burbot Bash Cancellation Notice* Our Flaming Gorge - TopicsExpress

*2015 Burbot Bash Cancellation Notice* Our Flaming Gorge Project Leader, Ryan Mosley, took these photos and wrote up this notice yesterday: Unseasonably warm weather has not been kind to ice conditions throughout much of Utah this month, and Flaming Gorge Reservoir is no exception. Ice is confined to the uppermost reaches of Flaming Gorge starting immediately above Buckboard Marina, WY. Currently eight out of ten boat launches are usable and many anglers are fishing from boats. Only Firehole and Buckboard launches are closed by ice formation. Ice conditions have changed quickly over the last few days. Some main channel areas have thinned and open water is developing along pressure ridges. Some ice may still be fishable, but the inconsistencies can make it difficult to tell especially to those unfamiliar with the reservoir. One experienced angler lost his life due to these inconsistencies, only two days ago. As a result of the changes in ice conditions and the warm weather forecasted over the next several days, the Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce and its partners cancelled the upcoming Burbot Bash. Angler safety and enjoyment is always the top the priority with these events. The Chamber will refund the registration fees to all of the participants and will still host the Burbot Bash in the winter of 2016. Their commitment to the anglers, the resource and effort to further exploit invasive burbot in Flaming Gorge is highly commendable. Ive attached some pictures of the current ice conditions around the Confluence. A test hole in this area revealed about 6 inches of ice. Anglers venturing out on ice should continue to be aware of the most current ice conditions and avoid suspect areas like pressure ridges or discolored ice. Ice can change quickly due to warm air temperatures, wind and reservoir currents or springs. They should also take precautions on the ice by notifying others of their location and time of return, fishing with a partner(s) and carrying ice safety equipment such as ice picks, throw rope and a safety whistle.
