2015: PLATEAU PDP ELDERS CHALLENGE JANG...SAYS THEY TOO HAVE BEEN PRAYING Elders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State yesterday vowed to challenge Governor Jonah David Jang if he insists on imposing Senator Gyang Pwajok as the next governor of the state. The elders under the PDP Equity and Justice Movement said the governor’s history of imposition of candidates was what led to the religious crisis of 2008. Former PDP state chairman and one-time campaign Director General of the Jang campaign, Professor Dakum Shown, Ambassador Binfa Cirtip Selchum, Barrister Umar Shettiyen and Ahmed Abdullahi Maikano who spoke on behalf of the group, said it was an insult on the people of the state for Jang to insist on imposing a candidate not only from his tribe but his own village. Professor Shown said the group had commenced the process of pruning the number of aspirants seeking the governorship ticket under the party to present a candidate from the southern Senatorial Zone to challenge Jang’s anointed candidate. “I went to Jang more than five times on who will succeed him, and he kept on saying that he was praying, that God had not given him the answer. I am a politician, I pray too and God showed my own too. God showed him Pwajok but my own said go to the south and pick. So we have two “Gods” now, and at the end, we will see which God will be proved right”, he said. He added that Jang is afraid of defeat and the elders are asking him to allow the will of the people to prevail because they are not in a military regime. Barrister Shettiyen said the governor’s insistence on a candidate during the 2008 Jos North LG elections was what triggered the crisis ripping through the state till date. “The political crisis that was created by government became a religious crisis. It is the same tactics that the governor wants to employ but this time he will not succeed because we will oppose him”, he said. DT
