2015: Senator Udo Udoma Should Not Run:- Arc NYA-ETOK, Ezekiel A while back, I started what I intended to be a series of my take on some sons of our dear state that I PERSONALLY considered fit to run for the office of the governor of our state. Top on the list was my distinguished Senator UUU. This illustrious on of ours had been my role model for a very long time. It has been my secret desire, wish, ambition, determination, aspiration, .... to be like him when I grow up! Last nite, I had reason enough to have a rethink. As I sat spell bound on my seat, I could not but tell myself that some people are more important than governors. The above statement is bound to raise some eye brows but quote me, MORE IMPORTANT THAN SEVERAL GOVERNORS PUT TOGETHER!!! -(hoping that the emphasis will magnify the point). To a vast majority of our sons and daughters, after God, is the governor. It is the ultimate of what a man can aspire to be. It is the epitome of fulfilment, while being the President could be the probable imaginable higher position, -and that, in our imagination, again, is a long shot! To them, the world stops at Itam junction! Last nite, a man, our son Distinguished Senator UUU did what Napoleon Bonaparte could not do! The event was the celebration of his 60th birthday, and the 30th year anniversary of his law firm. It took place in the prestigious Lagos Oriental Hotel. It was slated to start by 7pm. I had arrived at the venue with my lovely wife and peeped into the hall before going to secure a room with a beach side view. For a moment, I wondered why my senator would take a hall capacity that could seat well over 1000 people. I was worried as there is nothing as bad as having an event in a half filled hall. To my pleasant surprise, guests started streaming in long before the proposed takeoff time. The story is not that the hall was filled to capacity, but the quality of the guests. I have tried over the years to play on the Nigeria Level. I know the big boys and the silent power movers and shakers. As I moved round, I started spotting them one after the other. I was shocked, amazed, mesmerized, and abashed! At a stage, news makers came in unrecognized! The governors were not necessarily the centre of attraction, they were important, very important, but not necessarily the stealers of the show. Dangote was there in person, Jim Ovia, Tony Elumelu, Peterside, Otedola, Nduka Ogaigbena, Tony Momoh, Donald Duke, should I continue? That they were there in person is just one part of the story but the more interesting part is that each of them felt privileged to be there! To demonstrate that, by Midnight, NONE of them had left the hall! Five Hours, and counting! One more significance of this was the networking platform it created for those that had long wished to have audience with these lords. After the first few moments of protocol formalities, the floor was open and virtually anybody that had desired to see our governor, had a filled day. They were all relaxed and we all became near equals as there were too many important people for any particular person to appear unreachable. On my part, by about midnight, I tracked a perfect time to have an uninterrupted business session with oga Dangote to the extent of exchanging vital documents. Odiho uked Inem ke edia ke inua! How honest will I be tomorrow to claim that I have not benefited from our Senator UUU? In my humble opinion, we are in dire need of the people in the class of Sen UUU in our state to create the new class of those that can survive without attaching themselves to the apron strings of government (especially in the state), To this end, I will humbly advocate that: 1. UUU be left out of 2015 politics formally and officially if possible so that he will no longer be insulted by those that believe that the only way to minimize his influence is to heap unwarranted insults on his person. 2. A state reception be organized to honour him and formally appreciate the positive image and light that he has brought to our state. 3. Through that, imprint on the minds of our youth the fact that you can be great and accomplished without necessarily being into politics. As a matter of fact, it was acknowledged openly that Sen. UUU was one of the very few senators that openly rejected the normal money gestures in the senate at his time. 4. Through him, start a process of appreciating our non political illustrious sons, and bring them into a pool that will always talk for our state at the national level. Ndito-Eka, In all, and above all, I wish to use this medium to congratulate, and express my deepest and most profound admiration for and to a man that I have always had as an icon; our own Distinguished Senator Udoma Udo Udoma. While It will be excellent to have him as our governor, for me, it will be more desirable and expedient to have him as our own Dangote, and even MORE!!!!!!
