2015 Tips on Finding the Right Gym for You : Many of you are thinking about joining a fitness center at the beginning of 2015. You are very eager to join a fitness center right now but once you join you will typically be locked in to one year of making payments so be sure to ask the right questions so that you have all the information you need before committing to a gym that might not be the right fit for you. 1) Look into the cancellation policy. If your fitness center requires you to write a letter to an out of state company in order to cancel your membership then be weary of this club. Although the intention is to never stop working out there may come a time in which you are not satisfied with what your gym has to offer, you may want to save money or you might move out of town. Requiring you to write a letter to an out of state company in order to cancel is just a way for the fitness center to get one or two more payments out of you before they officially cancel your membership and its also a pretty shady business practice. By the time you write the letter and it gets processed they will get one or two more payments out of you after you wished to stop payment to your account. If you pay your dues each month and have been a loyal member then this club shouldnt give you any hassle if you want to cancel your membership for any reason. Make no mistake about it, all fitness centers have the ability to cancel your membership at the front desk. 2) Dont fall for the $0 enrollment fee special. This is not a special at all. Most clubs will wave the $0 enrollment fee at any point of the year if it means you walking out the door without joining. In fact, never pay an enrollment fee when you join a fitness center. They might tell you its a processing fee. Process what ? Ask them what costs $59 - $99 to process and watch them stumble over their words. It doesnt cost anything to process you into the system so dont fall for this one. This is just a way for clubs to sucker you out of more money up front. If a fitness center really wants to offer you a true special then they can do better than the typical $0 enrollment fee. They just figure you dont know the difference therefore they dont offer a true special. They just make it look like a special when in fact it is not. 3) Ask about the end of year enhancement fee. Sales managers will quickly skim over this part at the point of sale if they even bring it up at all. Most gyms will charge an annual fee of about $29 at the end of the year which is supposed to go towards gym upgrades and new equipment. This is not considered part of your monthly dues, this is an extra charge that your sales consultant probably failed to mention to you when you signed up. Before you know it an extra $29 comes out of your checking account at the end of the year that you were unaware would be coming out. If your gym is rundown and hasnt made any upgrades in the last year then dont get stuck paying this fee. 4) Ask about the Freeze. This is another way that gyms will trick you out of more money. You may want to cancel but the sales manager will suggest that you simply freeze your membership. What this means is that the fitness center is not cancelling your membership but they will stop taking payments out of your account for 3-6 months. One day after 3-6 months without giving you a warning your fitness center will start taking payments out of your account again when you thought they would need your verbal permission before they started doing so. Good managers will explain what a freeze is thoroughly so that you understand what it means but most managers will briefly explain it just enough so that they can say they told you but at the same time did not explain thoroughly how the freezing process really works. If you have been a loyal member then your fitness center should be loyal back to you by not pulling a fast one over on you. 5) When touring a club pay attention to how the members welcome you. If you are going to be spending 3-5 days out of the week at a particular gym then you want to be sure you are surrounded by people that will make you feel as though you in a friendly environment. Not all members will go out of their way to smile or say hi because they are in their own world and are just at the gym to get a workout in but as you tour a club for the first time you should notice a couple of members being friendly to you because at one time they started out just like you and they understand how intimidating the gym can be so they will want you to feel welcome. This is a sign that members are happy with what their gym has offered them. If you walk in to Fit Body U you will notice a difference in the overall feeling that members give you compared to most other clubs. 6) When touring a club pay attention to how the staff treats you. When you walk into a club you should be greeted within 20 seconds. If a staff member sees you but doesnt say something like, Ill be right with you. or doesnt acknowledge you at all then this is a sign of the kind of service that you will be receiving over the course of your membership. If you do not get the service and guidance that you need then you will probably become frustrated and discouraged before eventually dropping out of your workout routine only to be stuck into one year of making payments to a fitness center that hasnt held up to their part of the deal. You do your part by paying dues each month so a fitness center should do their part by giving you the guidance and service that you need to succeed in your weight loss endeavors. Also, more than one staff member should acknowledge you during a first initial tour of what could be your new club. This shows that the fitness center has a friendly staff. If the only person that acknowledges you is the sales manager taking you on the tour then this is a clear sign that the staff does not put any effort into a member that is probably intimidated being in the gym in the first place. The trainers, assistant managers, daycare attendents and front desk staff should all be making you feel welcome. If they dont try to make you feel more welcome by acknowledging you before you are a member then you can expect the same kind of service or worse once you become a member. 7) Tour more than one club. Your town may have more than one fitness center. The fitness center you choose could have a direct impact on the direction you take on the way to your weight loss goals. Choose the wrong gym and you may not receive the guidance you need to achieve your goals. Be sure to choose a gym that has the right atmosphere for you. If you only tour one club then you have no way of knowing what you are missing out on.
