2015: We Didn’t Endorse Peter Obi For President –S’East Monarchs The Council of Southeast Traditional Rulers yesterday denied ever endorsing the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi for 2015 presidential election. Reacting to a report in one of the national dailies that the Southeast traditional rulers had endorsed Obi to contest as President in 2015, the council in a statement signed by its chairman, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, said that, “The South East Council of Traditional Rulers finds both the caption and some parts of the report, very embarrassing and most unfortunate as they did not reflect what actually transpired at the chieftaincy title conferment on His Excellency,Chief Peter Obi by Anambra State traditional rulers”. Eze Ilomuanya added : “No doubt, His Excellency, Chief Peter Obi is an illustrious son of Ndigbo, who to many Nigerians, performed creditably as governor of Anambra State. We also share in this belief. However, what the chairman and the council expressed dismay at, is the alleged issue of Southeast monarchs tipping Chief Peter Obi for the Presidency of our country, Nigeria. It is even more appalling when His Excellency, Chief Obi has not told anybody that he was angling for the presidency”. He explained that the chieftaincy title conferred on the former governor was purely an Anambra State traditional rulers’ affair and not that of the South East monarchs who only attended the ceremony as invited guests. “These clarifications became imperative to avoid anybody hiding under the cloak of South East Traditional Rulers Council to pursue self-serving agenda and cause unnecessary confusion. As a responsible body, the council appreciates the genuine efforts of some Igbo illustrious sons, including His Excellency, Chief Peter Obi.” identity and dignity of Ndigbo through hardwork and excellence in service,” the traditional ruler said. He stressed that the council had laid down procedures for carrying out its activities and obligations to Ndigbo and Nigerians, which must be adhered to. Said Ilomuanya : “ The council is also not subject to the caprices of any individual as it only pursues the collective interest of all. The reference made to the South East Traditional Rulers embarking on endorsement spree should therefore be totally discountenanced as there is no iota of truth in it”. The Sun.
