2015 governorship race: Commissioner steps down for Gov. Aliyu’s candidate By Segun Adebowale / October 10, 2014 There are also strong indications that the candidate that stepped down is the Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Mu’azu Bawa Rijau One of the aspirants in the Niger State gubernatorial race on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party has stepped down for the likely successor of Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu. There are also strong indications that the candidate that stepped down is the Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Mu’azu Bawa Rijau. Talk is underway to get more of the aspirants to step down or agree to a consensus candidate. Our correspondent reliably gathered that Rijau, after much pressure from stakeholders to step down, is still in shock as he had hoped Aliyu will favour him over others. This disclosure was made on Thursday by Aliyu while playing host to members of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, who paid him a sallah homage. According to him: “Three people from my cabinet indicated interest to join the 2015 gubernatorial race, but one has stepped down.” The three people from the cabinet vying for the 2015 gubernatorial race are the Deputy Governor, Hon. Ahmed Musa Ibeto; Rijau; and the Chief of Staff to Aliyu, Alhaji Umar Nasko. Governor Aliyu however refused to mention the name of the aspirant that stepped down but added that they are still talking with the others outside his cabinet to enable them come up with a consensus candidate. He said: “Eight people were initially interested. “One has been advised to step down and he has. “It is remaining seven aspirants. “We are still in talks with the remaining ones in my cabinet to step down so that we can go on with our primaries with peace, without rancour or problem. “We are also talking with others outside.” Aliyu then reiterated that by next week, the PDP in the state will come up with its consensus candidate, insisting that the next governor in the state will come from Zone C.
