20th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting Press Release by YB Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai Minister of Transport, Malaysia Liow: Connecting ASEAN is Imperative Malaysia’s Road Safety Institute Officially Appointed by ASEAN Today, I represented Malaysia at the 20th ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting held in Mandalay, Myanmar. I called upon fellow ASEAN Transport Ministers to work together to improve the infrastructure and networks that connect the nations for the sake of a more connected ASEAN. I am also pleased to announce that the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has been collectively appointed by the ASEAN member states as the ASEAN Road Safety Centre for the Southeast Asian region. Malaysia, especially the Ministry of Transport is honoured by this appointment. The significance of physically connecting the ASEAN member states cannot be denied if we are to achieve Malaysia’s vision to set up a ‘People-Centred Asean’. Whether it is land, air or maritime, a more connected ASEAN is imperative to the growth of the world’s seventh largest economy. There is so much potential in ASEAN, and yet our potential is not widely known, we can turn this into our strength, it is purely a matter of harnessing our potential, and for this we must mobilise the people of ASEAN. It is only with a unified voice, can we execute our vision. To echo the words of Malaysia’s Prime Minister, YAB Dato Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, we have to appeal to the people in order to create a greater sense of pride and belonging to ASEAN. A more connected ASEAN will enhance trade activities among ASEAN member countries while promoting rural development. We must also look to establish a safer and more reliable transportation sector while promoting green technology wherever possible to combat pollution and climate change. Malaysia especially, has come far in terms of providing a supply driven integrated transport network infrastructure. Our aim is for all modes of transport to be efficient and integrated as well as safe, stable and user friendly. The transport system in Malaysia has benefitted Malaysians while being able to provide fundamental services especially to those in need. We can contribute in developing a similar integrated transport network for other developing ASEAN countries. It is this nature of cooperation that we must foster. [END]
