20th November 2014 PRESS RELEASE CABINET APPROVES THE BOARD OF UGANDA FREE ZONES AUTHORITY Cabinet has considered and approved the Chairperson and Members to the Uganda Free Zones Authority Board for the period 2014-2017. This follows the passing on 5th December 2013, of the Free Zone Bill, by Parliament which was assented to by H.E. the President on 1st August, 2014, thereby coming into force. The Act provides for the establishment of the Uganda Free Zones Authority (UFZA), an autonomous public agency to over-see the establishment, development, management, marketing, maintenance and supervision Free Zones in Uganda. The urgency to kick-start the activities of the UFZA necessitated putting in a Board which will in turn put in policies, structures, systems and personnel to enhance Uganda’s position as a favorable destination, particularly for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Attracting FDI in significant quantities will further expand Uganda’s tax-base and create more employment opportunities, especially for Uganda’s youth. Accordingly, the Board of the Uganda Free Zones Authority has been constituted as follows: 1. Eng. Dr. Fredrick Kiwanuka - Chairperson 2. Dr. Margaret Banga - Vice Chairperson. 3. Mr. Stephen Kasangaki - Member 4. Mr. Lawrence Byensi - Member 5. Mr. Cleopas Ndorere - Member 6. Mr. Baker Mugaino - Member 7. Ms. Stella Nyapendi - Ex-Officio(Member) The Ministries of Trade Industry and Co-operatives and Finance Planning and Economic Development are now required to support the Board to expedite the establishment of a fully functional Uganda Free Zones Authority.
