20th Week Saturday John 1: ST. BARTHOLOMEW I grew up in a small town in Bicol whose, Baao, patron saint is San Bartolome. I never had the curiosity to find out who he was, but even if I had tried then, I would never have found anything in my Lolo’s library. In fact we know very little about him. He is in the list of apostles in Matthew, Mark and Luke, but he is not in John. What we have in John is Nathaniel, the same wise guy who had said, when Philip told him about Jesus, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” But clearly he found something good in Jesus and now scholars say that Nathaniel in fact is the Bartholomew in the gospels. Apparently he was quiet a guy. Tradition has it that he preached in India, Mesopotamia, Persia, Egypt, Armenia, Lycaonia, Phrygia, and on the shores of the Black Sea and was finally martyred either by beheading or by being skinned alive. He is venerated as the patron saint of tanners! What a way to go!
