21 Dec 2014 - WEATHER ADVISORIES ISSUED FOR SOUTHERN INTERIOR MOUNTAIN PASSES FROM FRASER VALLEY TO THE SIMILKAMEEN. Winter solstice occurs at 3:03 pm PST today (23:03 UTC) . A 990 mb low and frontal system has moved inland to the BC interior while a ridge of high pressure builds over the south coast. The expanding high pressure will generate moderate to strong onshore winds which, combined with a strong upper air jet, will bring a drier condition to the south coast. Expect clouds and scattered showers in the south and inner coasts with clearing breaks. The onshore flow will diminish this afternoon. West coast and northern Vancouver Island will see a little more precipitation easing tonight and then resuming Monday evening. The air temps in the southern interior mountain passes will rise as the front moves across the province. Snow will change to rain and then freezing levels will fall bringing back accumulating snow from the Coquihalla to the Similkameen. For updates check: weather.gc.ca/warnings/index_e.html?prov=bc For road conditions check: drivebc.ca/ A 1006 mb low developing around 150°W will intensify and move around the northern edge of the Pacific high today, arriving off the BC north coast on Monday as a strengthening 986 mb low with Hurricane Force winds. The effect of this system on the south coast will be felt on west coast and northern Vancouver Island on Monday afternoon. The inner south coast and Juan de Fuca will be least impacted with light to moderate precipitation and winds below warning levels. Sustained winds in knots (km/h in brackets): - West coast Vancouver Island winds strong SW veering NW this afternoon becoming light by Monday morning. Winds rising to SE Gale Force to 40 (74) Monday afternoon and evening. Seas to 5 meters subsiding. Periods of rain tapering to showers. - Queen Charlotte Sound winds rising to SW Gale Force to 35 (65) this afternoon, easing and veering to strong W overnight. Winds easing to moderate NW then light by Monday morning. Winds will rise to SE Storm Force to 50 (93) Monday evening. Seas to 5 meters. Rain ending overnight. - Queen Charlotte Strait winds strong W easing to moderate this morning then to light overnight. Winds shifting SE and rising to SE Gale Force to 35 (65) Monday evening. Rain ending overnight. - All other areas remain below warning levels for the next 36 hours. Showers will develop late Monday through the south coast. Solstice advice: It takes a while for the solar clock to catch up to the calendar. This is the shortest day of the year but sunrise will continue coming a little later each morning until early January ... however sunset is happening later. Reason to celebrate! Give it a name and have a party.
