21Jan2015 - Happy Transplant Day! Although this is our 10th day at the hospital for this visit and our 157th day since he was initially diagnosed with neuroblastoma, today is Day 0 on Liams Stem Cell Transplant calendar. (Yesterday was Day -1 and tomorrow will be Day 1. Its a practical application of number lines!) While today is a very exciting re-birthday for Liam, the process itself is not as involved as one might think. His cells were brought over from Carter BloodCare (where they have been stored since they were harvested back in October), checked multiple times to make sure they were indeed his cells, warmed in a water bath, then infused by gravity. Liam actually slept through the 30 minute infusion that started at 11:46 am and ended at 12:16 pm. As promised by the medical team, Liam smells a bit like creamed corn. The preservative that kept the cells from rupturing during their storage and thawing has a unique odor as it leaves the body. Its only supposed to last for a few days. I suspect that the preservative has also temporarily influenced his taste buds as he was high resistant to taking some of his regular oral medications. Fortunately, he did eat lunch and he is continuing to drink! Fred and I commented this morning that Liams nausea has been so much less after this more powerful round of conditioning chemotherapy than it was during his six other rounds of chemo. We are grateful and hopeful that the trend continues. Prayer Requests: 1) Regrowth of Liams bone marrow 2) Health for our bubble boy as his immune system regenerates 3) Continued minimal side effects (nausea, mucositis, hearing loss) from the conditioning chemotherapy
