22 years ago, Grand Island, Nebraska Celebrated its first MLK Jr. observance. It was an outgrowth of the work of a newly formed group Called The GI Committee on Diversity. As part of that group, I recorded the events of that day on VHS, using only primitive, in-camera editing capabilities. Our family was still living out of boxes in my parents basement. We had just moved back from Massachusetts, where communities regularly held such events. Kings actual speech was omitted from the video as it is copyrighted according to You Tube. Today, you can join in marking this special day, Monday January 19th at the YWCA in Grand Island. Yolanda Nuncio will receive the Living the Legacy Martin Luther King Jr. legacy award. Still seats left, call 308-384-9922 to save a spot. Complementary lunch and short program with Cyndi Pypers music and poetry readings from Dori Bush, Tricia Moon-Beem and Renae Burke Hunt. Starts at noon, over by 1pm. Lets remember what the holiday is really about - not just a day off for some but more so a time to remember all that has been accomplished towards equality... and how much further we have to go.
