23 Au 2013, Friday Get Thee to a Nunnery, Part 2 I went to another nunnery yesterday, this one is just a 7-minute walk from our place, and you can see the steeple from our sidewalk. It is a Franciscan church, library, and convent called La Recoleta begun in 1651. The museum is in the oldest part of the complex. I was alone in the museum with its multiple rooms. I was told to turn the lights on as I entered a room, take as many pictures as I wanted—without flash, and turn the lights off on departure. What a museum. Many times I thought back to the movie “Mission.” (They were Jesuit priests, I realize); evidently the Franciscans were avid collectors of artifacts dating back to 300 BC with the Nazca culture into the 1900s in the Amazon. Here is a huge collection of pre-Columbian cultures here in Peru, from the Nazca back in 300 BC. to the Incas, a down to the Amazon cultures. I have so much to learn, but we plan to return in 2014. I’ve added a just a few examples. This museum also has several mummies, but I do not want to post them on Facebook. The colorful clothing is from the Amazon collection, and the two bronze bulls are by the grocery store I shop at almost every day. Two of the vessels are the same but different sides showing birds. This museum has an extensive textile collection; I show one example from the Amazon, and I pass by the two bronze bulls on my way to the grocery store. Paz e Shalom
