23 January 1993: Michael Ferguson, 21-year-old Catholic, single and an RUC police officer was killed outside Londonderrys Richmond Centre when an IRA gunman came up behind him and shot him twice in the head. The gunman ran down Shipquay Street and was hit by a car but was able to escape. The .38 pistol used in the Const. Fergusons killing had been used in 3 other killings and another attack. Const. Fergusons killing was the 1st killing of a police officer in Londonderry in 5 years. His father had been in the RUC for 30 years before he retired. As a teenager, Michael Ferguson was beat up because of his fathers occupation. It was said that in Belfast republican circles, there was disquiet because they believed the Londonderry IRA were not doing enough. The following month was Const Fergusons birthday and his mother visited the scene of his death with a local priest who conducted a short prayer service. Mrs Ferguson left a single red rose with a card inscribed: to my darling son and best friend Michael John Ferguson on your 22nd birthday. Love and miss you so much. Mummy. XXX. LEST WE FORGET!
