#23 The Cyber House Rules--Episode 3ACV09 Written By: Lewis Morton Originally Aired: April 1, 2001 Opening Caption: Please Rise For The Futurama Theme Song Episode Events Transpired In: Act I Adoption? Yes, thats acceptable. Heck, its more than acceptable, its adequately satisfactory! While its important to find common ground, what we as a society so often (and sometimes it seems willingly) forgets is that its equally important to recognize, embrace and celebrate our individual differences. Besides, same gets boring after a while. Perhaps no other episode in the series better illustrates that point than this one. After a chronic bout with laziness on Fry and Benders part forces Leela to answer the door halfway through the latest edition of Good Morning Earth, we find that shes been invited to attend the latest reunion of her class at Cookieville Minimum Security Orphanarium. Hesitant to go at first after recalling how she was ostracized for her appearance, Leela ultimately resolves to make the trip, if only to flaunt her moderate success over those of lesser accomplishment. Once there, its quite clear that Leela is far and away in the most acclaimed position of ANY of her peers, but apparently her appearance still takes precedence and is mocked nonetheless. That is, until the bullying circle is broken up by childhood crush (and fellow bully--Leela was so lovestruck at the time that she failed to notice) Dr. Adlai Atkins, whose personality can only be described as the whitest of white bread. Meanwhile, Warden Vogel is working a scheme at the catering tables to unload all of his orphans on Fry. The delivery boy doesnt quite take the bait in time, however, as Bender jumps in the boat willingly. Upon hearing the stipend check is $100 per week per kid, he proceeds to adopt all 12. After a brief discussion with Dr. Atkins, Leela has opted to go for a phaser eye surgery to graft a parrafin eye onto her face. While Leela desires only a sample of normalcy in her life, Fry is dead-set against the surgery, insisting that perfection neednt be modified. Naturally, Leela ignores his pleas and goes under the knife. After unraveling the wrong patient (not a good sign when looking for a competent physician), Adlai reveals that Leelas attempt for two eyes was fulfilled (admittedly, she made two eyes work. But you cant beat the original). Leela relishes in her new normalcy, but Fry continues to be thoroughly displeased; even more so when Adlai conveniently starts showing an interest in her. On the other side of town, Bender and the orphans continue to wreak havoc, namely at OZorgnaxs Pub and later that night at Elzars, where our newest purple-haired bi-clops has gathered the crew to get better acquainted with Adlai. The crew is as enamored with him as Leela seems to be, but Fry STILL wants nothing to do with it, offering Leela one last chance to embrace what makes her unique over what is socially accepted. Once again, she neglects the notion and moves forward into the consideration of adoption. As in most cases, its easier to settle for convenience of proximity and between the two, Adlai and Leela decide to adopt one of Benders orphans. The police catch up with Benders unethical adoption practices, imprisoning the robot, Fry (and the orphans) in the process. Leela notices one of the children, a little girl cursed with a third ear on her forehead and a vestigial tail being ostracized by her fellow orphans and immediately chooses to adopt her. Adlai scoffs at the notion of adopting a child who doesnt qualify as normal and its here that Leela is FINALLY able to see the error of her ways and see Adlai as he really is (and frankly has always been). She demands that he restore her eye to its original state and threatens him with ocular extraction when he initially refuses. We close on a ceremony naming the orphanarium after Bender when he generously gives back the one stipend check that he earned while supporting the kids, resigned to the fact that he couldnt properly tend to them. Leela expresses her gratitude to Fry for being a true friend and standing by her for who she is rather than who she wanted to be. As the orphans depart back to the orphanarium, they leave him with a self-portrait of the group to illustrate their appreciation. Attempting to maintain a macho exterior, Bender crumples up the picture as the children trudge away, dejected. In true heartwarming Bender fashion, the robot waits until he thinks no one is around, un-crumples the picture and lovingly hangs it inside his chest cabinet. Unbeknownst to Bender, however, the orphans have witnessed the whole thing and dogpile him to the ground, mobbing him with hugs, much to his faux dismay.
