23 killed in fresh bout of violence in Helmand Twenty-three people, including civilians, were killed and a dozen others were wounded during separate incidents of violence across the Afghan southern province of Helmand over the past 24 hours. Seven civilians were killed and 8 others were injured during a roadside bombing in the Musa Qala district of Helmand on Saturday. The civilians were travelling in two cars when a mine ripped through one the two vehicles on Saturday afternoon between Musa Qala and Nawzad districts. The Taliban militants regularly plant roadside bombs to target Afghan and NATO forces, but the devices often kill Afghan civilians. Elsewhere in the province, thirteen Taliban insurgents have been killed during a four-day clearance operation conducted by Afghan security forces in the Mairmandab area of the Gereshk district of Helmand province. Separately two civilians were killed as a result of a land bomb blast in the Kajaki district on Saturday. Elsewhere in the district an Afghan Local Police (ALP) solider has been killed during a clash with the insurgents. The clash in Kajaki district broke out after the insurgents attacked their checkpoint. Extending his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the Helmand Governor, Al Haj Muhammad Naeem, strongly condemned the bomb attack as brutal and un-Islamic act.
