235374 Sergeant Henry George Mann M.M. 2nd Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment Henry Mann was born at Chesterton in 1890 and lived in Cambridge. He was employed as a compositor at the Cambridge University Press and was a pre-war member of the 1st Battalion, The Cambridgeshire Regiment (Territorial Force), his regimental number being 1343. He served in France and Flanders with the 1/1st Cambridgeshires before being wounded. On his recovery, he was posted to the 5th (Reserve) Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment and eventually returned to France, where he was drafted to the 2nd Battalion. Sergeant Mann was awarded the Military Medal for his gallantry during the “Hundred Days”, his award being published in the London Gazette on 11 February 1919. Sadly, Henry did not live to receive his award. On 29 September 1918, the 2nd South Staffords came under heavy bombardment at Noyelles. Henry Mann was grievously wounded and was evacuated to hospital. He eventually reached Rouen, but died there on 1 October 1918. He is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension: Plot R.III, Row I, Grave 10. The register for the cemetery lists his next-of-kin as his father, Henry John Mann, who lived at 177 Victoria Road in Cambridge.
