23X MORE DANGEROUS. National Teens “Don’t Text And Drive” Week is November 18th – 24th. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, and texting while driving increases the risk of getting into a crash by 23 times compared to those who don’t text and drive. At any given moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving. https://youtube/watch?v=Ss021L0hWU4 Sending or receiving a text takes a drivers eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent (at 55 mph) of driving the length of an entire football field. An estimated 23 percent of all crashes, or 1.2 million crashes each year, are caused by drivers using their handheld or hands-free cell phones or texting while driving. The penalty for talking/texting while driving is $159 for a first offense. A motorist caught a second time can face a $279 fine. Drivers found using a cell phone without a hands-free device on Fort Irwin will be fined $45, face possible UCMJ action, and attend mandatory remedial drivers training.
