ANCOL to have permanent campus at Chakkargaon Port Blair, Sept. 28 The permanent campus of Andaman College (ANCOL) will come up at Chakkargaon in an area of 3.6 hectares of land meeting the University norms. The decision to this effect has been taken after careful consideration of all the relevant factors such as the profile of students, the feedback from students and issues of accessibility, availability of transportation and other facilities. Moreover, this area can be developed as an educational hub as the campus of Pondicherry University as well as the proposed Medical College and many other educational institutions are in close proximity of this site. Accordingly, it has been decided to advise the APWD to go ahead with construction of the permanent campus of Andaman College at Chakkargaon and complete the construction of all essential infrastructures well in time for admission of the new batch of 360 students in the academic session 2015-16 and the permanent affiliation of Andaman College with Pondicherry University. The College has been established in view of huge gap between the number of students passing Class-XII examination from Schools in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and desirous of pursuing for higher studies and the limited intake capacity of the existing College namely JNRM College, Mahatma Gandhi College, Mayabunder, Andaman and Nicobar Administration. The College has been established after getting approval of the Govt. of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development under the scheme of Rastriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). The college was temporarily started in the campus of Govt. Senior Secondary School Haddo (Hindi Medium) with effect from 16th July, 2014 and was formally inaugurated by Lt. Governor on 26th July, 2014. Earlier, for identifying a suitable site for the permanent campus of the Andaman College, wide consultation with public representatives, Officers of concerned Department, educationists and other stake holder was done. The Lt. Governor had also constituted a Committee under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary and involving officers and educationists and including Member of Parliament, Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad (SA), Adhyaksh, Zilla Parishad (N&MA), Chairman (PBMC), Chairperson (SWB) and Chairman (Tribal Council, Car Nicobar) as special invitees to identify and recommend a suitable site which should meet the norms. Meetings of the above Committee were held and all relevant issues including comparative merits and demerits of the available sites were discussed in detail in consultation with Chief Engineer, APWD. As per norms of the Pondicherry University, approximately 10 acres of land is required for permanent Campus of the College for permanent affiliation of the ANCOL. The constraints of time for construction, the issue of CRZ clearance, availability of encumbrance free land and its geographical as well as locational pros and cons, the profile of the students who had sought admission in JNRM in the last 3 years as well as in the Andaman College in the current year and informal feedback from the students, parents and other stake holders – all these aspects were also taken into consideration, an official communication received here today said.
