24.01.2015 Jhumpa Lahiri wins the 2015 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature for her celebrated novel The Lowland. • The $50,000 prize - introduced in 2011 - is awarded annually to authors writing about South Asia in the discipline of culture, politics, history, or people. • Previous winners: Pakistani author HM Naqvi (for Homeboy), Sri Lankan writer Shehan Karunatilaka (Chinaman), and Indian Jeet Thayil (Narcopolis) and Cyrus Mistry (Chronicle of a Corpse Bearer). India and US have signed a Joint Declaration of Intent for cooperation in the field of Information & Communications Technology and Electronics (ICTE). • The 5-year agreement would help in strengthening industrial, technological, research & innovation and economic cooperation between India and US in the ICTE sector. • It would lead to US companies exploring opportunities for collaboration in Indias ambitious Digital India programme, Electronics manufacturing and Human Resource Development, through cooperation among private and public entities in a focused manner under the umbrella of the ongoing India-US ICT Dialogue. Indian academician Saraswathi Menon, is one of the seven experts appointed by UN on advisory panel to review UN peace-building architecture. • The 7-member panel will conduct a policy and institutional review to offer recommendations to the world body on the same. • The other 6 experts are: Anis Bajwa (Pakistan), Funmi Olonisakin (Nigeria), Sahel Sahara Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah (Mauritania), Charles Petrie¬ (France), Gert Rosenthal (Guatemala) and Edith Grace Ssempala (Uganda).
