24 August Dividing India KMC The BJPs staple political stance is to attack minorities, especially Muslims. On Saturday, UP State BJP chief Lakshmikant Bajpai in the presence of Union minister Kalraj Mishra launched a virulent attack on UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and Muslims in general. Bajpai claimed that, in our state, 71 of 100 crimes are against women. It is shocking but true that 99.99% of the accused in these crimes are Muslims. The UP government is defending love jihadis(sic) while victims are murdered or harassed by police. BJP aims to stop this and save the country. The SP and Congress hit back criticising the BJP for keeping the extremely communal and anti-national term love jihad in the partys agenda. The Congress leader Shobha Oza strongly defended inter-faith marriage, and sharply criticised the BJP for trying to communalise the issue. The SP leader Naresh Agarwal taunted the BJP for the use of the term love jihad and stressed that it was the right of men and women to choose their partners. (Times of India, August 24, pp.1, 24). But this is not the end of the communal assault. The very fact that a Union minister was present at the meeting, shows that this is part of a larger plot. However, this is old wine in new bottles. The secular parties and groups know how to fight communalism. Will they meet the challenge?
