24 LOSE SIGHT AFTER SURGERY Dubai International Airport is a major airline hub here in the Middle East. On arrival here this evening after a successful conference in the Iranian capital, Tehran, I have more time walking around this first class airport – an opportunity I never had before due to the limited time I used to spend here. The long stay at the airport waiting for my late flight to Riyadh was made easy for me when I found almost all the world’s biggest selling newspapers at one end of the airport: The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Times, The Financial Times and you name them. But what caught up my eyes was a front page story in the leading United Arab Emirates newspapers – the Khaleej Times and the Gulf News – these are highly rated newspapers in the Gulf States. The human interest story, as we say in journalism, is titled: “24 lose sight after surgery in India camp.” Parts of the story read : “At least 24 people have lost their sight after undergoing free cataract surgery at a camp in northern India, local authorities say, as fears grow the final figure will be far higher. Officials said 62 people had the surgery at a village camp run by a medical charity on November 4, and they were trying to ascertain how many people had lost their sight. irp “For now, there are 24 confirmed cases of patients from the camp who have lost their eyesight,” said Abhinav Trikha, deputy commissioner of Gurdaspur district in the northern state of Punjab. Media reports suggested many more could be affected…..for more on the story, visit the Khaleej Times website……very pathetic!!
