24 Week Saturday, September 21 Mattew 9: 9-13 ST, MATTHEW, APOSTLE The Matthew here is not the Evangelist but the former Levi, a tax collector. The episode begins with the call of Levi to be one of the twelve apostles. The call is followed by dinner with tax collectors and sinners. The message is clear: the pillars of the early church included people whose profession was not considered honorable at the time. The Pharisee found fault with Jesus for consorting with sinners. Jesus replied: “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” Who knows, our next archbishop might be a former Napoles agent!
