25 October 2013 Friday Morning Prayer Opening Sentence It follows that there is now no condemnation for those who are united with Christ Jesus. In Christ Jesus the life giving law of the Spirit has set you free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:1-2 Canticle Our Great High Priest In you, Jesus, Son of God, we have a great high priest: you have passed through the heavens, and are seated at the right hand of God on high. Therefore we hold fast to the faith that we profess: for you are not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses. In every respect you have been tempted as we are: and yet you did not sin. Although a Son, you learned obedience through what you suffered: and being made perfect, you have become the source of eternal salvation for all who obey you. This gives us every confidence: to draw near to the throne of grace. Where we receive mercy: and find grace to help in time of need. Heb 4:14-16, 5:8-9, 8:1 Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. AMEN Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd; * I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures * and leads me beside the still waters. He revives my soul * and guides me along the right pathways for his Name’s sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; * for you are with me; your rod and your staff, comfort me. You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; * you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over. Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, * and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Lesson Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil. For forty days and nights he fasted, and at the end of them he was famished. The tempter approached him and said, „If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.‟ Jesus answered, „Scripture says, “Man is not to live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” The devil then took him to the Holy City and set him on the parapet of the temple. “If you are the son of God,” he said, throw yourself down; for scripture says, “He will put his angels in charge of you, and they will support you in their arms, for fear you should strike your foot against a stone.” Jesus answered him, “Scripture also says, You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.” The devil took him next to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their glory. “All these”, he said, “I will give you, If you will only fall down and do me homage.” But Jesus said, “Out of my sight Satan! Scripture says, You shall do homage to the Lord your God and worship him alone.” Then the devil left him; and angels came and attended to his needs. Matthew 4: 1-11 Collect Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. AMEN Grace The Lord bless us and keep us. The Lord make his face to shine upon us, and be gracious to us. The Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, both now and for ever. AMEN
