Nach einer Idee von Christopher und Marc Bauder. 25 years “Fall of the Berlin Wall” Berlin.25 years later.Welcome. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989. Many special events and exhibitions are planned in Berlin to mark the anniversary of this key event in recent German history. The highpoint of the commemorations will come on the weekend around 9 November. A special light installation will be set up along the former course of the Wall as a symbol of hope for a world without walls. Made of thousands illuminated, helium-filled balloons, a border made of light will run across the city centre for the entire weekend: from the former border crossing at Bornholmer Straße through the Mauerpark (Berlin Wall Park), along Bernauer Straße, past the Berlin Wall Memorial, then to the river Spree near the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz, Checkpoint Charlie and finally to Kreuzberg and along the Spree to the Oberbaumbrücke. At five of the locations, the white balloons will rise into the air as a remembrance of the fall of the Wall and the peaceful revolution of 1989-1990. If the weather cooperates, the light installation will even be visible from outer space. Most of the events marking the anniversary will take place from late summer to autumn. Themes include freedom, the division of the city, the Cold War and the events leading up to peaceful reunification in 1989-1990. The Chapel of Reconciliation at the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße will be the site of a memorial service to be held on 9 November 2014 and a ceremony opening the permanent exhibition 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Other ways to explore the history of Berlins division include cycling tours on the Wall Trail, visits to the former East German watchtowers, the East Side Gallery (the longest section of the Wall still standing), the asisi Panorama The Wall about life in the divided city as well as numerous memorial sites.
