25 kids rescued from traffickers Malda, 10 November: Acting on a tip-off, the government railway police (GRP) recovered as many as 25 children who were reportedly being trafficked to have them work as labourers in the carpet industry in different areas of the country. A majority of the children hail from Noorpur and Dharampur areas under the Manikchak police station in Malda, while some also hail from villages in South Dinajpur district. GRP sources said the minors were being taken by some brokers who fled after the GRP spotted the children at the Malda town station. Two persons who claimed to be guardians of two of the children and identified by their wards were asked by the police to substantiate their claim. The GRP later handed over the kids to the English Bazaar police, from where they would be sent to a state government-run home, sources said. Most of the children are aged between six and 10 years. All of them belong to very poor families, and touts were trying to traffic them, the chairman of the district child welfare committee (CWC), Hassan Ali Shah, who rushed to the railway station, said. We are looking into the matter and will arrange for their safe return to their families. We will also arrange for their food, health and education, Mr Shah said. sns
