25-year-old arrested for impersonation THE police at CMS police station in Bariga have arrested a 25-year-old man who was allegedly going about in the Nigerian Army uniform, introducing himself as an official of the Joint Military Patrol (OPMESSA). The suspect, Ofoegbu Ifeanyi was arrested after his landlord reported him at the police station for stealing electrical appliances which were kept in a store in his rented apartment. Crime Reports reliably gathered that the suspect had in the last few years been using fake army uniform to scare members of the community and to get away with some of the atrocities he committed. A resident of Shokanmbi Street where Ifeanyi was residing told Crime Reports that “the moment he saw his landlord with a policeman, he quickly rushed into his room. People thought that he was running away but when he came out, he was putting on a full army uniform.” The fake military officer told the police officer that he was a soldier attached to Somolu/Bariga OPMESSA and that his base was at Ebute Ilaje. He was invited to the station where the Divisional Police Officer asked him why he had been evading invitation by the police in the past. When the arrested suspect replied that he needed permission from his boss before he could honour the police invitation, the DPO asked him to identify himself but Ifeanyi said that he left his identification card at the Army Barracks at Odongunyan, Ikorodu. Not satisfied with the response, the DPO called the Commander, OPMESSA in Bariga to identify him but unfortunately, the suspect did not even know the Commander who asked him to identify himself. Ifeanyi later confessed that he was not a soldier and that he was only using the army uniform to scare away hoodlums around Bariga from attacking him. The image maker in charge of the state police command, Ngozi Braide confirmed the arrest of the suspect to Crime Reports, saying that he had been arraigned in court. Ifeanyi, who lived at 9, Shokanbi Street, Bariga, was reportedly charged to court on a seven-count charge and the magistrate, Mrs Bola Folarin Williams, sentenced him to six months imprisonment each for the two charges to which he pleaded guilty.
