25 years ago, in Timişoara, Romania, the beginning of the Romanian Revolution was almost crushed in a bloodbath that lasted two days and turned the city into a ghost town. A week later, an ill-advised appearance of the dictator reignited the protests. This time, thousands of young people took to the streets of Bucharest and other cities, demanding freedom and democracy. The Romanian Army responded with bullets that left thousands dead and many more wounded. Thanks to the selfless sacrifice of these heroes, December 22 is not only a day of mourning in Romania, it is also Victory Day. The day when the best of us paid the blood price so that we could all get our freedom back. I will always be grateful to those brave young people who refused to stay home, as their families and friends advised them, who sacrificed their life for what they believed in and who, without ever knowing me, gave me the most precious gift I have ever received: that of growing up in a free country.
