25 years ago today I was a few minutes late leaving my office on the 11th floor of a brand-new, 15-story building in downtown San Francisco. As I was shutting down my computer, a loud rumbling began, immediately followed by the building starting to shake. Next it began to sway VIOLENTLY back and forth - on the 11th floor it felt like being near the end of a cracking whip. Now under my desk, I could hear items falling, people shouting, and shelves and cabinets tipping over. When it stopped, we co-workers gathered to check on each other; one woman was utterly hysterical and then went dead silent with tears streaming down her face. A colleague and I each took an arm and walked her all the way down 11 flights of stairs to meet her husband. I then ran to where I myself was supposed to be waiting to be picked up -- and exactly on the spot where I would have been standing if I hadnt been running late was a huge pile of bricks that had fallen off the building next door. Thanks, Universe. I sure am glad Im still here.
