25 years ago today, a symbol of the division, oppression, and tyranny began to be taken down in central Berlin...an expanse of stone and concrete that served to divide the western and eastern parts of the city, and was very much emblematic of the Iron Curtain that divided the western and eastern parts of Europe during the Cold War...a conflict that involved the two superpower nations of the time, the United States and the Soviet Union, taking part in various battles across the globe. These battles, however, werent in the conventional manner of warfare. Instead, both sides supported different factions in the name of the two philosophical tenets they espoused: capitalism and communism. From its creation in the early 60s (existing for almost 3 decades), the Berlin Wall demonstrated the abject destruction and mistreatment of the USSR and its Warsaw Pact nations toward its populace, refusing to allow them to cross over to the nations of the West. Many who attempted to breach the Wall were shot and killed. However, in time, the drive for freedom from such oppression ultimately prevailed, and the Wall came tumbling down. The blight that communism had brought to so many Europeans ended (though hardships still remain to this day)...and the event served as a reminder to those around the world still yet under tyrannical and authoritarian regimes that perhaps there is hope out there after all. May such a victory never be forgotten.
