Renewable energy award for GERMI director • Gandhinagar-based Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI) Director, Prof T Harinarayana has been conferred with “Energy and Environment Foundation Global Excellence Award-2014 in Renewable Energy Sector” • The Energy and Environment Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India and UNESCO New Delhi had organised at Delhi. • Theme : “Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency: Empowering Sustainable Tomorrow”. Appointments 1. Thailands coup leader, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, was officially appointed the countrys 29th prime minister, saying that he would appoint members of his new cabinet in September. • Dressed in a ceremonial white uniform with gold-colored braid and accompanied by his wife, key bureaucrats and junta members, Gen. Prayuth received the royal command to become premier—a customary point of protocol here—at the armys headquarters in Bangkok, rather than the countrys parliament. 2. Senior IPS officer Ramesh Chand Tayal has been appointed as Special Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). • Tayal, a 1980-batch IPS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre is presently working as Additional Director General in Shashtra Seema BAL (SSB). • He will continue in his new post till further instructions, said an order issued by Appointments Committee of Cabinet. Deaths 1. Noted Malayalam actor Chemancherry Narayanan Nair died at 79 • Chemancherry Narayanan Nair, the noted Malayalam drama and film actor died on 25 August 2014 at Chengottukavu near Koilandy in Kozhikode, Kerala. He was 79. • He acted in several Malayalam films and TV serials. Some films in which he acted included Mukham moodiakal, Abhijathyam, Ammakkilikoodu, Balettan. Economy 1. Global financial services major Nomura revised upwards Indias GDP growth forecast for this fiscal to 6 per cent from 5 per cent earlier amid a pick-up in private consumption, investment and export demand. • The Japanese brokerage firm has also revised the FY16 real GDP growth forecast to 6.8 per cent as against 6.5 per cent previously. • The countrys GDP growth had bottomed out at 4.5 per cent in FY13. India, Vietnam to deepen cooperation in defence, oil sectors • India and Vietnam on August 25 agreed to deepen cooperation in defence and oil sectors among others as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral ties with the strategically-important country. • Putting into play the “Act East Policy” of the Narendra Modi government, Ms. Swaraj held meetings with her Vietnamese counterpart Pham Binh Minh and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung during which a number of key bilateral and regional issues were discussed. National 1. Indo Russian Air Force Exercise (Avia Indra-2014) Commences at Astrakhan • With the aim to bolster ties between the Indian Air Force and Russian Federation Air Force (RFAF), Ex Avia Indra-2014 commenced today at Astrakhan region, near the Caspian Sea in Russia. The Exercise which has begun today will go on till 05 September 2014. • Ex Avia Indra-2014 which has commenced today is the first exercise of its kind between the two Air Forces and is seen as a major mile stone in military relations. This involves participation of fighter pilots, helicopter pilots, missile combat crew, as well as engineers from the Indian Air Force (IAF) along with their counterparts of the RFAF. 2. Gadkari says Modi’s dream project of Swachh Bharat by 2019 will be executed in a mission mode. • Union Minister for Rural Development and Drinking Water and Sanitation Shri Nitin Gadkari today called for practical approach to achieve the goal of sanitation for all by 2019. Speaking at a National Conference on Sanitation and Drinking Water here, the Minister said, the current allocation of Rs10,000 per toilet in rural areas is insufficient and soon the amount will be increased to achieve the real target. • Lamenting that even after 67 years of Independence, 60 percent people in India defecate in open; Shri Gadkari said that the dream project of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to build Swachh Bharat by 2019 will be executed in a mission mode. He also emphasized that massive funds will be mobilized for this purpose under the leadership of the Prime Minister. Persons in News 1. Former Test cricketer Yograj Singh and father of Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh, was arrested along with three others on in a brawl case over a car parking issue, police said. • The cricketer-turned-actor was arrested from Panchkula after a case under various sections of the IPC, including trespassing and criminal intimidation, was registered against him in a late-night brawl over a car parking issue, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Panchkula, Rahul Sharma said. Seminars – Meetings 1. The Border Security Force (BSF) and its Bangladeshi counterpart, in a joint statement agreed to conduct vulnerability mapping every six months as part of the decision to effectively implement the coordinated border management plan, with an aim to curb trans-border crimes such as drug and human trafficking. • A 20-member delegation led by Board Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director-General Aziz Ahmed is in New Delhi for the 39th Border Co-ordination Conference between the two forces. The Indian delegation is headed by the BSF chief D.K. Pathak. • Both sides comprise senior officials from the Home and Foreign Affairs ministries and Department of Narcotics Control, Joint Rivers Commission and the Department of Land Record and Survey.
