Manohar Lal Khattar appointed Haryanas new chief minister • First time MLA and former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) member Manohar Lal Khattar has been appointed as the new chief minister of Haryana. • 60-year-old Khattar is also the first Punjabi to become the Chief Minister of the state. Banking 1. UCO Bank identifies Kingfisher Airlines as wilful defaulter • Kolkata-based UCO Bank has identified Vijay Mallya-owned Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) as a wilful defaulter and will be sending a notice to the defunct carrier. • United Bank of India has already declared KFA a wilful defaulter for defaulting a loan of Rs 350 crore. Other banks like State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank are also mulling this route. About willful default • Intentional failure by a party to a contract, or a court case, to do what it is supposed, or ordered, to do. • Willful defaulter, In Banking it means a debtor who is not will to play bank loans even though he have money. Deaths 1. South African footballer Senzo Meyiwa died • South Africa’s Football captain, Goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has died on 26 October after being shot. • Senzo Meyiwa played for Orlando Pirates based in the Parktown district of Johannesburg as a goalkeeper. • He had played in South Africa’s last four Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Economy 1. UP clocks lowest growth among BIMARU states in 9 yrs, finds Assocham study • Clocking the slowest compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 6.9 per cent in terms of gross state domestic product, Uttar Pradesh is the lowest among the traditional BIMARU states (Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and UP) in this regard during the past nine years i.e. during 2004-05 and 2012-13, according to an ASSOCHAM study. • Bihar has ranked on top among the BIMARU states registering highest growth rate of 9.3 per cent in GSDP during the aforesaid nine year period followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.8 per cent) and Rajasthan (8.2 per cent) even as Indias overall gross domestic product (GDP) grew at eight per cent during 2004-05 and 2012-13 About BIMARU states: • The BIMARU states are four northern Indian states: Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. BIMARU is an acronym formed from the first letters of the names of the states. • In the mid 80s, economic analyst Ashish Bose coined an acronym BIMARU, in a paper submitted to the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. BIMARU has a resemblance to a Hindi word Bimar which means sick. This was used to describe the bad state of economy in backward states Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarpradesh. Later Odisha was included in the list resulting in BIMAROU. Several studies, including those by the UN, showed that the performance of the BIMARU states affected the GDP growth rate of India. International 1. Pakistan Commerce Minister Khurram Dastagir Khan has said the country would continue to trade with India despite border tensions. • The minister said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government is committed to increasing regional trade as part of promoting peace without compromising on national sovereignty. The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee released a commemorative postage stamp on Anagarika Dharmapala at Rashtrapati Bhavan. • The President said release of the commemorative postage stamp on Anagarika Dharmapala will contribute towards further strengthening the bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka and bring the two nations closer. • The President said this stamp release on one of the apostles of Buddhism, once again reminds us to work relentlessly and collectively to ensure an era of peace, stability and friendly bilateral and multilateral ties in order to create an enabling environment for the rapid socio-economic development of the people. 2. PM rededicates Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai • He was speaking at the inauguration of the Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai. He said, just as this 90 year old hospital has undergone kayakalp (renewal), India too, can undergo a kayakalp. • The Prime Minister expressed concern over Indias health indicators such as infant mortality and maternal mortality. He said society and Government should together give priority to the poorest of poor and makes whatever efforts we can to provide affordable health services. He said the Reliance Foundation Hospital was a step in that direction. 3. Schedule for General Elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Jharkhand and Jammu & Kashmir. • By virtue of its powers, duties and functions under Article 324 read with Article 172(1) of the Constitution of India and Section 15 of Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Commission is required to hold elections to constitute the new Legislative Assembly in the State of Jharkhand before expiry of its present term. Dhoni buys Ranchi franchise of Hockey India League • India cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sahara Adventure Sports Limited are co—owners of new Ranchi—franchise of Hockey Indian League (HIL). • Ranchi Rhinos, who were the inaugural champions of HIL, was scrapped following distrust between owners (Patel—PS Group and Uniexcel Group) and Hockey India (HI).
