26 July 1814 General Ross writes to his wife from Bermuda, informing her that his expedition will head in the first instance to the Chesapeake Bay area where military action will depend on circumstances - no sense American capital being targeted. Meantime he is worried about his wifes suicidal state of mind - a factor which inclined him to force the pace when he got to American so that he could get back home to Rostrevor. We steer in the first instant towards the Chesapeake where our proceedings will depend totally on circumstances. I feel my Ly (Elizabeth) our distance very very much nor can I describe to you the anxiety in which I feel to hear of you, which is something I cannot flatter myself with the prospect of for weeks the hope of your strength of mind and fortitude not forsaking you.The care of our little children ought and must divert your mind from yielding to unpleasant thoughts. A day of happiness will come that my Ly look forward to it with hope.
