26 th June 1975, the credibility of our great indian democracy - TopicsExpress

26 th June 1975, the credibility of our great indian democracy finally was put to test following a despotic and dictatorial reaction to a corruption charge against then prime minister Indira Gandhi....with the declaring of emergency under the false pretext of looming foreign aggression......the largest democracy in the world plunged into an abyss of its biggest darkest days.....the press was muzzled, the opposition was jailed and many more atrocities were committed in the name of internal security including enforcement of schemes like mass sterilization programmes....after the emergency was finally lifted it dented Gandhis image and battered her electoral prospects as a fallout ....the unprecedented coming together of all opposition political parties under the astute leadership of Jaiprakash Narayan enabled the defeat of the Gandhis to dawn the revival of our parliamentary democracy......even today the most disturbing event in the country after independence is not incorporated in history textbooks or even widely discussed and is met with a conspicuous silence by grand old national party....
