26th August 2013: Elysium: After several weeks of non-descript, non-entertaining, banal films (The Worlds End, 2 Guns, Red 2) we finally get to the most eagerly anticipated film of the summer (well in the Griffiths household at least) - Elysium At last, a science-fiction picture that lives up to the genre. I could be flippant and describe it as Robocop meets Terminator on a Ringworld, but that would be doing it an injustice. This is good Sci-Fi, well told by director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and well acted by Matt Damon (as always). It is set in a District 9 landscape of Shanty Towns and the ever present Ringworld (or the Torus as it is referred to) orbiting the Earth. The world is split between the Rich enjoying long life and perfect health on Elysium and the Poor being regarded as dispensable work units. This results in a desire to overthrow the rich and give the same benefits to the poor. So when Damon is irradiated with a lethal dose of radiation he picks up the mantle of peoples hero and fights for the good of all mankind (actually he is fighting for access to the healing machines that will cure him - but that doesnt sound quite so heroic) No spoilers here but the ending is refreshingly un-hollywood So at last a film that was worth reviewing
