26th March Food for your Mood Feeling Bloated and Gassy Your stomachs so swollen and you can hear it making some really random noises and gurgling. Gas (flatus), burping, and bloating are all normal conditions but not when it becomes painful and uncomfortable. Gas is made in the stomach and intestines as your body breaks down food into energy. Causes of burping can present medical conditions, such as high amounts of stomach acid, a stomach ulcer or even a gallbladder problem. I was surprised to discover that in some cultures, a person may belch loudly after eating to show appreciation for the meal. Certain sugars, such as lactose, and fructose will cause the stomach to react and cause bloating and gas as it has trouble digesting the lactose. These sugars are often added to processed foods and medicines to make them taste sweet. Lactose is found in milk, cheese, and other dairy products (even some breads). If this is you, try to eliminate lactose for two weeks and see if the bloating and gas subsides. Other examples of gas-producing foods are: Peas, lentils, and beans of all kinds. Vegetables, such as artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, peas, radishes, and raw potatoes. Fruits, such as apricots, bananas, melons, peaches, pears, prunes, and raw apples. Wheat and wheat bran. Eggs. Carbonated drinks, fruit drinks, beer, and red wine. Fried and fatty foods. Sugar and sugar substitutes.
