27.08. 2013: Representatives of the media were welcomed to Kiev and to the 32nd Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships at an opening press conference on Tuesday at the Sports Palace of the Ukrainian capital. The panel consisting of the 1st Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport of Ukraine Sergey Glushchenko, the President and Vice President of the Ukrainian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation Albina and Irina Deriugina, as well as FIG President Bruno Grandi and FIG Secretary General André Gueisbuhler addressed a warm welcome to the media representatives present onsite. More than 150 journalists, photographers, TV broadcasters and radio commentators have registered to cover the event. FIG President Bruno Grandi thanked the organisers of the Ukrainian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation and the City of Kiev for their professional preparations of the championships and expressed his admiration for the famous Deriugina School for Rhythmic Gymnastics. Secretary General André Gueisbuhler added he was looking forward to this event on the busy FIG calendar that marks the highlight for the discipline this year. Ms Irina Deriugina pointed out that the Ukrainian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation had been waiting for the occasion of the 50th anniversary to stage the World Championships in Kiev, home of the Deriugina School. She was delighted to see the sport becoming more and more popular and the increasing possibilities for kids to take up the sport. Underlining the importance of promoting Rhythmic Gymnastics as an Olympic discipline and of developing the sport, Ms Deriugina thanked the FIG for its support. She concluded by emphasising that Rhythmic Gymnastics was the basis for many show performances as will be seen during the Opening Ceremony of the event that followed the press conference.
